Last week’s Mortgage Solutions poll revealed that brokers are split on the impact possible buy-to-let regulation would have on the sector.
Just under three-fifths of you (58%) thought more red tape would hinder the rental market, while 42% were unconvinced that regulation would hamper the recent buy-to-let recovery.
The FSA alluded to the buy-to-let sector in the Mortgage Market Review and the industry waits with baited breath to see if it will become subject to full regulation.
This week’s poll asks whether the CML was fair to state that the FSA views brokers and lenders as “drug dealers”. To vote, click here and scroll down to the poll.

Divided I presume into the majority who recognise that the FSA is a huge Quango of paper pushers doing nothing to help customers at all, just form filling. The minority? Those who have selfish, greed reasons to try and restrict the market to only them advising.

Of course the buy to let market should be more tightly regulated – much more tightly in fact. It is absolutely ridiculous that a person with (say) £50k to ‘invest’ can walk into a mortgage broker who is less well qualified and less regulated than an IFA and then leverage his ‘investment’ by (say) a further £150,000 to purchase a £200,000 single investment in one asset class. If the same person walked into an IFA and was told to borrow an extra £150k to invest £200k into ONLY one Unit trust I guess we would see a crucifixion at Canary Wharf. So why is the BTL allowed? Why are mortgages advisers treated so lightly? Why not full on RDR for them too?
